The Wireless Institute of Australia is the national body for radio Amateurs in Australia. The WIA was established in 1910, the first such national body established in the world.
Australian amateurs may (but are not obliged to) have membership of the WIA, and do so as individuals. Clubs and similar organisations can have a form of associate membership.
The WIA offers various services to members, including the publication of its monthly magazine, Amateur Radio.
The WIA is also the principal lobbying body with the Government of Australia on Amateur subjects, through the government's administrative body, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). In 2009, the WIA contracted with ACMA to manage licensing of Amateurs; this follows and is linked to an earlier arrangement for the WIA to conduct (training and) testing of prospective Amateurs.
