D-STAR, IRLP, EchoLink are not modes
D-STAR is a digital voice and data protocol specification, not a transmission mode. D-STAR transmission is FM with a proprietary data encoding.
IRLP and EchoLink are internet based signal propagation techniques rather than transmission modes.
Transmission modes relate to how radio waves are modulated.
Radio is an atmospheric electromagnetic propagation.
Telephone is electrical conduction propagation through a switching network.
An internet is a packet switching network. The Internet is the largest internet.
IRLP and EchoLink are based on the Internet, as is Voice-over-IP.
As another example, APRS consists of an AX.25 protocol, containing Bell 202 audio frequency shift keying, on top of FM when operated on 2m band.
