A podcast is a collection of digital media files, usually digital audio or video, that is made available for download via web syndication. The syndication of the files distunguishes podcasts from simple download process or by streaming.

Software applications known as podcatchers are used to automatically identify and retrieve new files when they are made available. The files are stored on the user's computer and can be accessed there or transferred to another device for later use
